Mercedes-Benz Malaysia officially introduces the new W223 generation S-klasse in the S580e Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV) form yesterday. Now in it’s 7th generation, this flagship limo is certified as the pinnacle of luxury for the brand, marking to be the latest and most advanced model in it’s long lineage of S-klasse generations. The new Mercedes-Benz S580e features a 3.0-litre in-line 6 turbocharged engine matched with an electric motor to smoothly deliver 362bhp and 500nm of torque through a 9G-tronic gearbox. The century sprint of 0-100km/h is dealt with in just 5.2 seconds and will accelerate to a limited top-speed of 250km/h. This M256 engine is similarly installed like the one in the outgoing S450 W222 model, however with the addition of the electric motor that produces 30bhp and 50nm of torque with a rather promising all-electric range of 100km. On the design, it is unmistakably an S-klasse in many ways. Mercedes-Benz have given much cleaner lines throughout the car, however kept the hanging ‘tri-star’ on the front bonnet - a signature touch with all luxury Mercedes-Benz throughout the lineage of S-klasse generations and more. From every angle, the car has grown in dimensions. It is now 52mm longer, 22mm wider and 10mm taller than the W222 model it supersedes but with a 60kg reduction in weight thanks to the use of lightweight materials such as aluminium in it’s structure. But the coolest new feature in our minds for the new W223 generation Mercedes-Benz S-klasse would be the new Digital Light technology. What is it about?

The lights: with innovative digital technology both inside and out

In each headlamp, DIGITAL LIGHT has a light module with three extremely powerful LEDs with light that is refracted and directed by 1.3 million micro-mirrors. The resolution is therefore more than 2.6 million pixels per vehicle. This allows highly precise light distribution. It makes High beam Assist over 100 times more precise then 84-pixel light when excluding oncoming traffic or road signs from the light beam. Light/shadow graduations and the light distribution of all the other adaptive light functions are also realised with considerably more precision, optimising illumination by e.g. fog light, motorway light or city light. Thanks to LED technology, the new S-Class has also taken a leap forward in its interior lighting: Mercedes-Benz has now realised interactive interior lighting for the first time. The active ambient lighting supplements ambient lighting with an additional layer of light. It is integrated into the driving assistance systems, and is able to reinforce alerts visually. The S-Class is the centerpiece of the brand, and stands for the fascination of Mercedes - Benz. It follows a long tradition that extends back to the beginnings of the Mercedes brand in the early 20th Century. Each model has decisively influenced the automotive engineering of its era. Well before the official designation S-Class, the models in the executive and luxury class were the mainstay of the Stuttgart-based company's portfolio and have always stood for luxury, comfort, safety and lifestyle. The continuous ancestry of the S-Class begins with the model 220 (W 187) of 1951. The designation "SClass" was officially introduced with the 116 series in 1972. Since it’s inception, Mercedes-Benz have delivered more than 4 million units of S-klasse over the years and locally, there are over 18,000 units sold in Malaysia since it’s introduction in the late 1970s. Prices for the new W223 generation Mercedes-Benz S580e have yet to be officially announced by Mercedes-Benz Malaysia. Deliveries will begin starting late January 2022, but if you’re looking to order one right now however, there is already a 6-months waiting list even before the official announcement of the price.
